Welcome to LASERPUB, the International Laser Publishing
Conference of Fidonet. Each month we post a summary of
Conference Guidelines and Traditions, so that new users may more
smoothly get acquainted with our forum on electronic publishing
topics -- and so that we all may maintain a friendly atmosphere
which reminds us that we are not only typesetters and graphic
designers, but also PEOPLE.
GENERAL CONFERENCE GUIDELINES
(1) TOPICALITY. While our main focus is on tools and techniques
of computerized publishing, this topic naturally leads to many
related topics concerning the history of printing and
publishing; multimedia techniques and "teletypesetting" (the
delivery of typeset documents by computerized telecommunications);
the craft of language; and so forth.
If a thread seems to be getting a bit afield, then participants
or even "innocent bystanders" might suggest moving it to netmail
or another echo.
(2) "THINK GLOBALLY." Participants should keep in mind that
LASERPUB is an INTERNATIONAL echo: your messages circulate
around the world. This has some interesting implications: for
example, be sure to provide adequate national and even
international information such as telephone area codes, postal
address codes, and so forth.
(3) EVERYONE IS WELCOME. LASERPUB is emphatically a democratic
and egalitarian community of people devoted to the arts of
typography and page design. If you are just starting to explore
this field, please feel free to join us! If you happen to use a
"lower-end" application such as First Publisher, Microsoft
Publisher, or WordPerfect, you are just as valued as our users
of the most sophisticated typesetting and composition systems.
We are all "just learning"!
(4) TWITTICISMS. Many users have their "twits" -- applications,
techniques, or topics which are simply not of interest to them.
The best solution is to "post and let post" -- read and write
messages on LASERPUB topics you like, and let other users do the
same. If a message is clearly off topic or personally abusive, the
most effective policy is generally to ignore it.
LASERPUB TRADITIONS
(1) THE KVETCH. While "platform wars" ("My system is better than
yours") are counterproductive, we encourage reasoned
comparisons, preferences, and especially kvetches. The KVETCH,
that art form pioneered by LASERPUB maven Mike Arst, is a
creative complaint or lament about your favorite application,
operating environment, etc. It is an electronic publishing
"slice of life" which at once educates and entertains.
(2) HUMOR. Friendly and humorous colloquies have been associated
with the art of typesetting since the epoch of Aldus Manutius,
Desiderius Erasmus, and Marguerite of Navarre. Humor is the
leading of our main text on typography -- and generous leading
promotes comprehension.
WELCOME TO LASERPUB!
